Applying to grad school at Vanderbilt for next fall. Any advice/suggestions?

It's hard to give advice/suggestions if we don't know what you are looking for.

Apartment? House? Budget? Neighborhoods? Things to do?

The more specific you are, the better we will be able to help you.

Well, if I get accepted my salary will be about $24k/year. I'd rather not have a roommate, so I'd be looking to rent an apartment or small house on my own. I'll have a car. And... hmm. I like Mexican, Chinese and Indian food. Like to hang out in bookstores, coffee shops, that sort of place. I'm pretty liberal, which makes living in southwest Ohio kind of an adventure at times, so part of me is slightly reluctant to move farther south on that account.

Bombs away!

We can't offer suggestions based on your income alone because we don't know what your other expenses are.

Please come up with a rental budget range and we can narrow down areas for you.

Uh... yeah. Wasn't necessarily looking STRICTLY for rental/budget advice. Funny how none of the folks in the other threads made that assumption. Think I'm getting a sense of the type of personalities that inhabit this city, though...

$24k with no roommate will be pretty tough. The average rent in Nashville is in the mid $800s, and areas close to town are generally a bit higher than that (and if they're not, then there's a good chance you want to stay away from them).

Plenty of Mexican food, though there are only a handful of places that I personally like. Not as plentiful with Chinese or Indian, but they do exist in the area. Plenty of coffee shops, though.

Nashville itself is a moderately liberal city, surrounded by moderate to very conservative suburbs. Probably not all that different from, say, Cincinnati.

I'm sorry if that's the feeling you get, but the truth is we get lots and lots of people on this forum, and some have very vague questions. We also get a lot of repeat questions (such as "what are the good areas of town?" or "what is there to do for fun?"). There is a plethora of information already out there on this forum.

I am only speaking for myself here, but I do not like to give out generic advice. In order to do so, I would have to give either incomplete information, too much information, or make assumptions based on what I know of your situation (which in the first post was simply 'grad student looking to attend Vanderbilt' and I took the liberty of searching for the county you list as your location). I really don't like doing that.

I am more than willing to give you advice, but I'd like to know what I am going to be giving advice about so I don't waste my time or yours. I have my areas of expertise, and other posters have theirs. Knowing more about your situation helps us help you.

It's too bad you feel that way.

What "assumption" are you talking about? You posted a very vague OP here.

Go back and read what you posted about Rutgers in the NJ forum, how much more info you provided, and questions you asked. The first thing you asked is if there is an affordable place to live, which is a logical first question for someone who is considering relocating.

Maybe we can start over. You can ask what you REALLY want to know, you can use the blue "Search this Forum" tab on the main Nashville page to find recent threads on whatever you want to know, and you can come back when you get accepted and ask away.

I was probably a bit out of turn in that last response. Apologies.
