TWO cities from my old, tiny state of Connecticut made the unfriendly list . . . No wonder I moved!

I had a really good experience in Oakland several years ago. It didn't rub me as unfriendly in the least.

I think this is pretty spot on. Nashville, Asheville, Savannah, Charleston... I mean, it's fairly arbitrary, you could add Memphis, Knoxville, Birmingham, Charlotte, Greenville SC without blinking an eye. Clearly the south is the place to be.

With the exception of the Hamptons, most of those cities on the second list have much bigger problems than "unfriendliness." Is that supposed to be some sort of euphemism for blighted and depressed?

On the other hand, hmm, people are friendly in ski resort towns that primarily serve vacationers? You don't say!

I won't even get into whether I think friendliness is even a virtue. As long as I don't get mugged or car-jacked in Newark, I'm good.

These lists are dumb.

It seems that most of the ones on the friendly list are at least some level of a tourist destination (except for maybe Fort Worth?). While I think Nashvillians are pretty friendly in everyday life, I'm guessing the hospitality industry plays a bigger role for lists like this.

Notice Newark, Oakland, and Wilmington are adjacent to larger, more well-known destinations.

The lists were voted on by readers of Traveler magazine, so they are voting about their experience as a visitor, not as a resident.
