According to this article in the New York Times, Nashville is second only to Houston in the growth of its young, college-educated population. Even former hot cities like Charlotte, Atlanta, and Raleigh are losing some of their popularity to places like Nashville, Salt Lake City, and Denver.

I wanted to move to Nashville last year, but was unable to find a job paying $40k+. I have a few years experience and graduated in 2010. I got interviews and two offers, but both were under $35k. Jobs seem to be available, but pay does not match the COL.

The cost of living in Nashville is increasing, with rents and property prices escalating substantially. It would be difficult to live a decent lifestyle in Nashville for under $40k as a single, even with little debt. I don't see the cost of living getting any better in the future there.

Of my high school class back in east TN, a lot of people have moved to job hubs like San Francisco, NYC, the Mountain West, and some have moved to Michigan. While I know a few people who were able to stay in the South, most can't if they want a good job.

Yeah I'm 29 and work downtown. People are thrown off when I tell them I grew up here and am content living cheaper in the suburbs. No one is from here anymore.

When you say Mountain West where are you referring to exactly?

As far as income vs. COL: I make about $30K/yr and posses very little debt (student loans, credit cards, car, etc) and it's almost impossible. Also, single and recent grad. It's a nice, booming city; however, incredibly challenging to find both good living and gainful employ right now.

I'm doing a preliminary search to move to Nashville by the end of this coming summer and I am finding nothing but opportunities that are 40k+ as well as rental properties that are under 1k a month. As I've said, it's just a preliminary search, but I am certain that not everyone is going to have the same struggles as you did.

I'm a new grad flocking to Nashville. Not young anymore, ha, (second career). My job should pay between $38-40K, assuming I get the nights and weekends I'll request. I also applied in Charlotte and Raleigh, but never heard back. Those other cities you mentioned are way too expensive, or hot, for me. Nashville looks just about perfect. I hope it will be.

K rn chandler, what do you think a good salary would be to live in Nashville? I'm trying to get an idea of the cost of living there. The cost of living calculators I'm checking show Nashville to be equal to or $5,000 less than the COL in my area.

When you say "hot," do you mean temperature-wise? Because Nashville gets really REALLY hot.

Just clarifying....

Thats because Nashville has some of the friendliest people on earth, the women are gorgeous, its a great Music City, the weather is pretty nice the majority of the year, they have no state tax, the traffic is not as bad as cities like Atlanta and Miami. Its a great city to call home. I always wanted to move to Austin, TX but Nashville is closer to my family and it offers some if not more of the same qualities Austin, TX with less of a cost.

Not as bad as those other cities (Miami, Houston.) I'm from FL, so just about anything will be a cool-off in comparison.
