I currently live Indiana in (where I've lived my whole life). I am starting a job search in and around the Shelbyville, TN area. My background is in manufacturing.

I'm a married mom to three kiddos (2-boys ages 9 and 6 and a daughter age 4). Please tell me what you know about this area. Schools? Jobs? Cost of living? Weather? Etc.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Christina

Did you move to Shelbyville? We are also thinking about moving there? If so, what did you find out that helped you make the decision? Thank you.

What type of employment are you looking for? I live nearby and to be honest unless you have in demand skills the wages are not all that good.

The cost of living is low in Shelbyville, but there's a reason for it, because the job market is not that great in Shelbyville or Bedford county either. Unless you send your kids to Webb School in Bell Buckle, the schools in the area are horrible. If you want access to Shelbyville, but have a better quality of schools and quality of life, would living in Murfreesboro be an option? It has good schools and the job market is better than Bedford county - and Shelbyville is just a quick drive down 231, if you need quick access to the town.

I work in human resources but also do administrative support work in basically any field. We understand that the Shelbyville area is not a big work source area. How about the Murfreesboro area?

Thank you for your previous response. I appreciate any and all help!

Murfreesboro is a much better job market than Shelbyville although with the right skills (HR may be one of them) you may be able to find great employment opportunities in Bedford county. There are many large employers in Murfreesboro and it is around 30 minutes drive from Shelbyville.

Why Shelbyville? Do you have family in the area or are you just looking for rural?

Shelbyville would not be a good choice, when you have Murfreesboro up the street. Better neighborhoods, higher quality of life offerings. Shelbyville is cheap, but not worth it since you have children. There are more activities for them in Murfreesboro, and a better school system. I would look at the Christiana area (South Murfreesboro) and even the Rockvale area (Southwest Murfreesboro) for options.

If the job market is not that great, why would refugee resettlement agencies place Somalis there?
