We are thinking of relocating to Murfreesboro from upstate New York for a job opportunity. We've looked at some of the school reports, and are interested in Blackman and Riverdale schools. Can anyone give me any feedback on which is a better school and why? We have children who are active in sports and in technology usage. I would hate to have them go to a school that wouldn't allow them a chance to make the team. Thanks.

Here is what I wrote in your thread in the TN forum...

Riverdale probably outperforms Blackman in most sports, especially football. At Riverdale, football is probably just as important as academics. Coming from upstate NY you might be surprised at just how big HS football is here.

Both schools are similar in size, with somewhere around 1,700-2,000 students, although both should have some of their overcrowding relieved when Rockvale High opens in a few years.

Riverdale was built in the early 70s, I believe, and Blackman around 2001-2003. Therefore, Blackman has much nicer and new equipment and facilities, although their stuff will be outdated soon, as Rutherford County schools has a 10 year technology plan in which they don't replace equipment, computers in particular, until after 10 years of use.

I'm not going to say which school is better, because I don't know. But Blackman has probably a better academic reputation. I'm not sure it's justified though.

Definitely Blackman. I live in Smyrna but we are in the Blackman district. So I don't know Riverdale but we just moved here from DC area last spring and my daughter has adjusted very well. Outside of the kids getting use to her "accent" or lack of southern accent the other students were quick to befriend her. She made friends immediately and she is on the shy side as far as new people. The school is fairly new and there is alot school spirit, they aren't the winning team all the time, that's Smyrna High School but they got spirit....so if your kids are in sports then I think they'll love Blackman and feel challenged.

My daughter is honor student so she has hard time being challenged...but her teachers seem to recognized that and adjusted to teaching her. So I was impressed by that.

Check out their web site: Blackman High School

Thank you both. Still trying to decide. Honor students in NY, my kids may have a hard time adjusting to the academics too. My daughter is a good athlete, but not a superstar - a little on the small side too. With the winning records of Riverdale, I'm afraid she won't even have a chance to compete - or sit the bench until she's a senior. My kids are also advanced in technology use, so I'm leaning toward Blackman.

My wife is a substitute teacher in Murfreesboro and spends alot of her time at Riverdale HS. The administration and faculty there are wonderful and I've heard that it ranks very close to Blackman in student retention and successful graduates. You can't go wrong with either school!
