I think the key word here is "illegal". Nobody wants to provide health and welfare benefits and schooling through our taxes or lose a job to someone that is here illegally and therefore doesn't pay taxes. We also don't want our pay scales to be artificially lowered or income tax burdens increased by greedy business owners that pay illegals next to nothing just because the worker has no recourse. That being said, we all need to remember that unless you are a full-blooded member of one of the Indian Nations not only do we come from a family of imigrants, but our ancestors STOLE this country from the Indians and Hispanics as well.
I do feel that if you come to this country you are obligated to learn English and use it as your primary language at work or in doing business. I don't have a problem with people walking down the street speaking Spanish to friends and relatives any more than I would if I were walking through New York hearing Italian or Hebrew. As long as those people could communicate in English should there be a need why should I care?
Being bi-lingual today is a big advantage and if you have that ability, not passing it on to your children is just plain foolish. In some countries, like Canada, if you're NOT bi-lingual you won't climb the ladder. Learning French is (or used to be) required in grade school there, as a SECOND language.

I completely agree with that - I would never tell someone not to speak their Native language or any language they wish, walking down the street or otherwise! I speak German with my family when they visit or German friends all the time. You said it right - the key is to know how to speak English as well.

This has gone off subject about Nashville and more over into the Immigration issue. Time to close. If you wish to continue this conversation, please take it to the immigration sub forum.
