Hi there,

I am moving to Nashville in the late Summer/early Fall of 2016 and just want to better understand the bug population of Tennessee. What can I expect to encounter in my apartment in the city....I hear we have to pay a monthly fee for pest control..what exactly are they trying to keep out?
I am not at all fond of spiders, in fact they are my least favorite thing in this world but I am an adult and try to deal with them the best I can when I encounter one in my home. I am trying very hard to tell myself that they are probably more scared of me than I am of them but I sometimes can't get past my fear of them. I visited Tennessee a few months ago and saw the wasps flying in the air and that didn't bother me one bit.
Can anyone tell me how often they have spiders, snakes or bugs in their homes and what kind(s) I can expect to see. I want to prepare myself so there aren't any unexpected surprises that I wasn't warned about ;-)

I really appreciate any and all info :-)

Thank you!!

Cicadas are the bastards you might have to look out for. They don't bite, but they are loud and big and they fly.

I get my house treated too. Never seen anything more than ants. Tiny ones. Cicadas are loud but except during the big invasion (every 13 years I think) I've never ever seen one!

In your apartment? You'll probably be fine.

We have a house on an acre of land in the suburbs. We have plenty of spiders and crickets. We've also had two lizards (in the house) and two snakes (just in the backyard and garage.)

In your apartment, with all the wood construction termites are the most feared. Bedbugs can be in the mattress anywhere. Buy new, not used. The usual roach should be controlled with indoor sanitation. The foundation spray the company provides should keep the critters out. The pest co could put out roach/ant traps to keep away from any pets.

Have not seen any snake, you would have to find them. The dangerous spiders (black widow, brown recluse) like to hide.

You may see some small lizards, nothing to bother you.

I saw this on Channel 2 about an apartment complex in Hermitage that is apparently polluted with Brown Recluse.

Hermitage apartment residents fear brown recluse infestation | WKRN News 2

Black Widows love shoes among other things. Brown Recluse love cardboard boxes.

Yes ma'am by all means buy a new mattress that is in its plastic when it's delivered

Also be sure to ask about security on the premises.

You can certainly have spiders in your apartment. I have seen them here and when I lived in Knoxville. I hate spiders myself but theyre hard to get rid of I think.

I know this is an old thread . . . but I have NEVER had 'palmetto bugs' in my kitchen in the 10 years I have lived here. But there they are! As if Covid wasn't enough. Anyone else having trouble this year? Doesn't seem like it's been overly wet but maybe??? I bought some spray, never leave food out . . . etc. YUCK!
