Comedian Aziz Ansari's new Netflix show Master of None has been making a lot of buzz lately. Its season finale is set in Nashville, highlighting it as a desirable place for young people to visit spur at the moment, with great food and places to go on dates.

Does this sort of media exposure hint that Nashville might be regarded as the next Portland or Austin? Not that it's not already cool and culturally iconic in its own right. But Nashville's fame for the place to be for country stars seems a bit old-school, like Hollywood is for film or New Orleans is for jazz. But I mean does this sort of youthful draw also mean young people might go there as a place to live for the sake of the city, not just because of the entertainment industry there?

I wouldn't say it is the next Austin because both cities have come into prominence at about the same time, Nashville came a bit earlier in popularity than Austin actually due to the entertainment industry. I wouldn't say it is the next Portland either because there are too many differences in culture, industry, politics, and development patterns between the two. Young people have been coming to Nashville for years, that is not something new. The only new thing is that the concept of such is being broadcast into the mainstream so that Nashville is much more nationally known for the attributes you mentioned other than country music. Nashville's exposure only helps the city solidify its place as a new south city with strong growth projections. To truly understand what Nashville has to offer, you have to visit the city and the surrounding area.

It's not the season finale, but yes that's the main gist of the episode. In fact the title of the episode is "Nashville".

I do think the overall perception of Nashville has changed quite a bit with people across the country but there will always be those who think it's still 1992 and think it's a sleepy little southern city with a bunch of twangy country music stars and little else. Regarding the city being featured in an episode of this show, Aziz Ansari grew up in South Carolina and it's quite possible that he's been here many times and really likes it so he decided to feature it in his show.

You're about a decade behind, I think.
