Not currently living in Tennessee but thinking very seriously about moving to Franklin relatively soon, how close is Franklin to "tornado alley"? Did the past week's tornado do any kind of serious damage to Franklin? How frequently does Franklin get affected by tornadoes? Any information would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

There have been tornadoes in the general Franklin/Williamson County area (as there has been almost everywhere in West and Middle Tennessee). The major damage last Tuesday was in the Fairview area of Williamson County. The tornadoes we had last week were an exceptional occurrence; they are saying the worse in 75 years.

The short answer is that there is a tornado risk in Franklin, but your chances of being killed or serious injured by a tornado is way down the list. Actually, of all natural disasters, more people die in Tennessee from floods than by tornadoes. I consider my risk of tornadoes in a whole year to be somewhat the same risk as from driving for just one day.

I would agree with the above poster about tornadoes. they are not something you need to be overly concerned about. If they really scare you, build a storm safe room, they cost about $6 to $8K

The weather reporters are so overly cautious in our area when it comes to tornadoes, and they track literally what street they are on at any given moment. In addition, tornado sirens go off all over Franklin, even before we ever have an official tornado warning (which actually happened the other night). There's plenty of warning so you can seek shelter if necessary.
