Spoke with someone who works in the transportation business for Sumner County the other day, and they said TDOT had recently visited and discussed a few topics:

1.) Hatten Track expansion moving along
2.) Vietnam Veterans / 386 Expansion

It's the later that caught my attention. They said that TDOT is looking to turn 386 from 4 lanes to 6. I know there was some brief reporting a year or so ago, and I believe TDOT even did a study or two. With Sumner County's working population to grow 28% (only 1% behind Williamson) over the next 5 years, I guess they are finally seeing the need to expand it.

Hopefully they pay attention to the on/off ramps as that's what seems to bog it down in my opinion.

Thought that was a little longer out, like around 2022. I believe TDOT wants to connect 386 to 109 all the way to I-65 at Portland before they expand capacity. That's sort of the old plan that they've had out for over five years.

This is a pipe dream much like northern 840. Why not build a bridge connecting Old Hickory/Hendersonville? They've talked about it for years....its never happened.

It is under construction. Drove past it just before Christmas. Demand for H'ville to Old Hickory direct access is not as great as an eastern bypass. Take it from someone who tries to avoid Nashville traffic when I'm driving north on my client routes.

The reason Northern 840 will never happen is because of two reasons. There are a ton of alternatives and the population base is not there like exists on the southern arc from I-40 to I-40.

The 109 connector to I-65 through Portland. Vietnam Vets has been in existence for approximately 30 years; 109 for over 60 years. You need to familiarize yourself with the expansion plans for 109. Back in the 90s, the state decided that the northern 840 arc was not necessary because the 109 connector from I-40 in Wilson County to I-65 in Sumner would take care of a lot of the need for a northern 840. So 109 has been getting widened now for over a decade. 386 and 109 currently don't connect directly. There is a long term plan to make it a limited access connection, sometime after 2024. That is what I was referring to. You need to keep up with TDOT plans and schedules. Interstate 65 Interchange at State Route 109 - TN.Gov

So this is just an interchange? Sorry, i thought you were talking about major construction on 109 more towards Gallatin/Wilson Co.

i'm of the opinion that you should make roads as big as possible during construction. probably not financially viable, however. i just hate seeing constant construction because of little additions here and there.

Much needed but will be a major pain. I'll believe it when I see it, however.

I certainly think expanding 109 fully (especially through Gallatin/I40) should be a major priority along with finishing the 165 connection through Portland.

Finally, on the Old Hickory/Hendersonville bridge...the last I heard about it was it was sent to a special study committee to see about the viability of making it a toll bridge. Which, as I recall, would be the first toll bridge or road in the entire state. TN just doesn't do toll bridges or roads. That was probably 4-5 years ago (I think Diane Black was still a state senator) and I have no doubts it died in that special study committee. The idea is a good one and has viability, even as a toll bridge; but I think it is a pipe dream.

Agreed. I haven't heard anything on bridge either. Much needed though.
