Hello. My family and I currently reside in Alaska. We have an opportunity to relocate to the Nashville area. I have been through there often with a job, but never long enough to really get a full feel of the area. I have two children in high school right now. I have seen comparisons between just a few "burbs" like Franklin to Spring Hill etc. However, I'd like to get opinions on all the surrounding suburbs. Work c will not apply to our choice of community nor will commute time to the city etc. We enjoy hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, photography, arts, sports but also like our quiet laid back space and time as well. Don't like the rush of cities, but like being close enough to catch a concert or game etc. We do prefer towns/cities large enough that offers the shops, restaurants etc that we enjoy. And we're also keeping in my our mind that my wife and I will be empty nesters in a couple years, so also looking for a place that will satisfy our wants and needs as well in our future home town etc. Thanks for any feedback.

we're looking to rent at first while we look around for a house. Prefer large 2 bedroom or 3 no more than 12-1300 a month for rent.

Sounds like the western edge of Gallatin may fit what you're looking for. It is more affordable than Hendersonville and quieter, but you still have access to great schools, shops, restaurants, etc. If you do look into Gallatin, try to land yourself inside of the zone for Station Camp Schools, which typically will be closer to Hendersonville anyway. It's not your only option, but I hope that helped any.

Thank you, I'll look into that area a little more. Anything good about Clarksville? Someone on another post suggested it however so far, I've seem to have read more con's about it than pro's.

I'm afraid I'm no good with outlying areas, although I have a friend who lives in Dickson and she likes it there (west of Nashville). You can look for rentals or at least an idea of how far your money will go - on this Middle TN real estate website. Just pick the county and RENTAL and put in your desired budget.

RealTracs Real Estate Mid-South Property Finder

Zillow has a similar option.
Best of luck!

Rentals are tricky here, and your rent range is right about average for the area, so there is a LOT of competition.

I also would look in Rutherford County (Murfreesboro) in the Siegel High school zone for more options.

We're in Murfreesboro, and Blackman and Siegel schools are both great districts. We just bought a house in the Blackman area because we have young children entering school in a couple of years.

How's the crime in Nashville area and suburbs like Mursfreeboro, Gallatin, etc. Was reading about Clarksville, sounds like lots of crime for a smaller city? And my wife saw one of those posts about safest states, unsafe cities, etc. and Tenn was listed as one of the higher crime states. Which surprised me. Any info on that?

The conventional wisdom on that is ... if you don't participate in a high-crime lifestyle (drugs, gangs, etc) you typically can move into a safe neighborhood and not have any problems whatsoever.

That doesn't mean you will NEVER be a crime victim, but, generally speaking, non-property crime here is not random.

There is also some issue with the way Tennessee reports crimes that makes our rating seem worse than it is. Yes, there certainly is crime here, and even the safest areas have break-ins and vehicle smash-and-grabs, but if you use street smarts and live in a safe area, you should have no problems.
