When I moved to Boston in 2012, there were 0 options for flying to BNA nonstop. Now, we have 3 airlines with multiple daily flights. That's a lot of expansion just out of this market in a few years.

It is, and I love it! Boston is easily my favorite Northeastern city, and even though I'm a Delta Silver Medallion frequent flyer, I love having JetBlue and Southwest as options when flying to Boston. It's nice not to have to change planes in Cincinnati or Atlanta anymore to get to Beantown.

In a somewhat related note, supposedly Nashville is very close to landing (har har) a nonstop to London and possibly even a nonstop to Tokyo. One of the factors of Bridgestone's keeping its North American HQ in Nashville was the strong possibility of a nonstop to Tokyo in the next year or two.

Southwest has announced it is starting new service between Nashville and Minneapolis-St Paul. In addition, Southwest is adding additional flights between Nashville and Dallas, San Antonio, Saint Louis, and Fort Lauderdale. The Ft Lauderdale flights will connect with Southwest's new routes to the Caribbean, Mexico, and South America.

With nearly 7 million passengers passing through Nashville, Southwest is BNA's largest airline. These new routes will bring the number of daily Southwest flights out of Nashville to 99.

2016 was another record-setting year for passenger traffic at Nashville International Airport, the fourth year in a row it's beaten its own record. With an increase of 11 percent over 2015, there were 13 million passengers traveling through BNA in 2016. Among the highlights from 2016:
  • JetBlue entered Nashville with daily flights to Boston and Fort Lauderdale.
  • United started service from BNA to San Francisco.
  • WestJet entered Nashville with daily flights to Toronto.
  • Frontier began flying between Nashville and Orlando, Chicago, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.
  • Delta began nonstop service to Boston.
  • Southwest began nonstop service to Charlotte.
  • Two different regional airlines began service to Muscle Shoals AL, and Greenville and Tupelo MS.

To prepare for future growth, the airport in 2016 also introduced its $1 billion plan to expand the airport with a new international terminal, more gates, parking, baggage handling, and even a possible rail link to downtown Nashville.

Delta Air Lines is adding another destination from Nashville this spring: Seattle. Delta will then have 12 destinations from Nashville: Atlanta, Boston, Cancun, Cincinnati, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York-JFK, New York-LGA, Orlando, Salt Lake City, and Seattle. Delta will also become the 3rd airline to fly between Nashville and Seattle; Alaska and Southwest are the other two.

BNA is starting the first phases of its $1.2 billion expansion and aggressively pursuing international flights before the new international terminal is even started. Groundbreaking for a 6-story expansion of the parking garage with spaces for 2000 cars. Pictures of the expansion are attached to the article.

Virgin America, which was bought by Alaska Airlines just a few months ago, is going to start offering nonstop service between San Francisco (SFO) and Nashville. Three years ago there were no non-stop flights between Nashville and the Bay area, and now there are three airlines offering nonstop service to the Bay: Southwest to Oakland, and United and Virgin America to SFO.

I believe Southwest already has a direct between Nashville and Raleigh. Great to see that Delta is adding it as well. I currently live in Raleigh and it is great to see increasing connections between two of the fastest growing southern cities. If prices were right, I could def see flying to Nashville for a long weekend. At 8 hours, the drive is a bit long for a 3-day weekend, but a direct flight wouldn't be bad.
