Hi all,

First, I appreciate the time you are taking to read and respond to this thread. I will try to be succinct as possible. My wife and I are in our mid-late 20's and are looking forward to (hopefully) moving to the Nashville area in the next couple of years. We are both originally from very small towns in mid-eastern TN and moved away while I have been attending medical school. I will be practicing at Vanderbilt and she will be working with a marketing firm downtown. I was hoping to get some advice on potential locations that would be no more than a 30-40 min commute of Vanderbilt Medical Center in our budget (up to $800-900k) with a decent sized yard (we have 2 labradoodles who love to run around) in a good neighborhood. I've been told to look at places in Brentwood, Franklin, Hendersonville, and Spring Hill, but it's hard to get a grasp on the commute times for these places without physically measuring it ourselves, and also there seems to be a bit of variability even within these neighborhoods. If anyone has any advice or anything I should look out for or add to my list, or anything else in general, I'd love to hear it. Thanks so much in advance!

Do you WANT to live in the suburbs?

Because with your budget, I would look in the West End/Hillsboro Village/Whitland areas near Vanderbilt, in the heart of town.

Tough question...I grew up on a large farm but have spent the last several years in a major city during medical school, so I've experienced both and it's difficult deciding which setting I prefer. I love the convenience of being in the middle of town, but I feel I might want to settle down where it's a bit more quiet with the wife and dogs (and future kids). I'm definitely about to do some substantial research on the areas you mentioned though, so I really appreciate that.

As for additional recommendations, my budget is really about $1-1.2 mil but it would pain me to truly max out given my student loan debt unless the house/location was perfect, but if I could find a nice suburb exquisitely close to the city, I'd do it.

Thanks again!

Unless you just enjoy being in your car a lot, with ever worsening traffic, I would give a good, hard look at those areas and even Oak Hill/Forest Hills out toward Brentwood. There are many one-acre and wooded lots in the Oak Hill/Forest Hills locations that are very pastoral. Some of the Nashville neighborhoods (not Oak Hill/Forest Hills but the ones inside I-440) are walkable to desirable commercial areas.

I'm sure others will be along soon to recommend other inner-loop neighborhoods.

You can use Realtracs.com to search locally.

I've lived in Franklin for 10 years the traffic has gotten really bad. We just bought a house in Belle Meade that we will be moving to after we renovate. I would live as close to town as you can. If you want a more suburban feel look at Green Hills and Forest Hills.

As the demographics of Davidson change the schools will too.
