It's little things like that which start to get to you after a while. Hire a property Managment company to rent your California house out. Gain equity while you rent somewhere in Nashville for no less than two years before you sell your California house.
Excellent advice.

Maybe because we had the option to go to the beach and great restaurants? Now we have Chili's and O'charlies and a 95 degree 100% humidity sandbox. What one poster said about wanting to go back to California and not being able to afford it is exactly where we are. The house we sold in Oakland is now worth more than double what we bought it for so we are looking at moving to other cities on the west coast like Portland because they're more affordable. A word about school rankings. I personally believe that the scores are fully a function of the amount of money that's being spent in a particular school district. In green hills (Hillsboro High) there is a huge population of ESL students and kids with disabilities Because they offer a lot of programs for those children and that's going to impact testing scores on the whole.
You know, it's illegal here to buy wine in the grocery stores on Sunday. This drives me insane. Like I couldn't just buy my damn wine on Saturday night and drink myself into a stupor on Sunday morning anyway. Haha All the shops in Franklin's downtown are closed on Sunday. Super annoying that nothing in this town functions one day of the week because of other people's religious beliefs. It's little things like that which start to get to you after a while. Thanks, that all makes sense. We don't own anything here , we rent. A big part of wanting to move is feeling like we will never be able to buy anything here , and my husband really wants land , not a tiny strip of grass for a yard. Either way we've decided to hold off for now , as we want to check out Portland, co, and charleston as well. I'm pregnant and we were trying to rush the move before it was too late to fly /switch doctors and because we are feeling grim about a small space with two kids , but we're going to re-evaluate 6 months after the baby is born. Thanks again!

Good luck to you and your family! I understand about your concern of moving while pregnant as I did so at 32 weeks from Kansas to Virginia for my husband's grad school. Glad it was our first child and my sister lived in the area we moved to, so I had help finding doctors and such.

We were looking at Charleston, SC about 1 1/2 years ago because of a job change for my husband. As much as I love Charleston (we were living in Columbia, SC then), I'm glad he didn't get that job as the salaries tend to be lower than Nashville and the housing, property and car taxes & homeowner and auto insurance would have been higher, in addition to having state income tax. Also, the humidity on the SC coast is unbelievable - some days it feels like someone threw a wet blanket over your head. That would be a huge change from what you have now in CA.

Thanks ! My husband is extremely concerned about humidity , so it's definitely something to think about. Choosing a new place to live is definitely not easy.

I will never understand why people want to move to a new state, and are then disappointed that it's not like the state they left - then they want to move back. It boggles my mind. I've seen it happen so much, and in the long run, the people like that who move just aren't ever happy. That's one of the reasons this board (and you posters who participate) is so very helpful

It kind of reminds me of people who go to Europe, then come back and complain about how different it is than the US. "The bathrooms are so small!!, "The kitchens don't have stainless and granite!", "The pavement is so uneven!", "The stores close so early!" "Where are all the Starbucks/Applebees/Olive Gardens?!" "The portions are so small!" - seriously. Stay home in America and eat your breadsticks and unlimited buffets.

The folks who come here and get advice are miles ahead of those who assume their new city is a Utopia and move there blindly after only a short visit or two.

Not everyone moves because they want to.

I thought before you ever moved here you said you would only be here a year. What made you buy a house and stay? (Not being snarky, genuinely curious). I know you were incredibly unhappy about the move before you even visited.

I know that, which is why I specifically wrote "people want to move to a new state..." and NOT simply "people move to a new state..."

No, I had to stay for 1 year (contract). Let's just say that they are making it financially attractive to stay for now.
