Ok, I'll toss my 2 cents, maybe 1 cent after this recession.

My family looked at both Murfreesboro and Mt. Juliet. Really, comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges. Mt. Juliet is a still a small city. The person you see working out at the Y lives down the street, you see your neighbors at the movies, ect. My wife works in downtown Nashville and she still runs into people she knows everywhere we go in MJ, even though she doesn't spend her days here. When I'm with those that live and work in MJ they can't go very far w/o seeing people they know. Some like it because of the sense of community, some don't because of the lack of privacy. MJ is definitely smaller than Murfreesboro and Murfreesboro definitely has more to do. MJ is still run on a good ol' boy network. Which has its + and -. Christianity is huge in MJ. As a Christian I love that every house on my block except for one goes to church (they're Hindu). Again, this could be a plus or minus. If you want shopping, M-boro wins hands down. Providence is nice, but it's limited.
I would have to disagree with stuff to do for kids. I've got three and have never been at a loss. There are lots of great dance studios, sports, and other activities. Sure, not as much as M-boro, but M-boro is about 5x the size of MJ.
As for Nashville access, MJ is much closer (15 min to downtown from my house, 20 in heavy traffic) and I 40 usually has less mess than 24.
So to sum it all up, if you want a city feel go to Murfreesboro, if you want a small town feel go to MJ.

You are under the false assumption that ALL of Murfreesboro is a busy city atmosphere. This is not true. There are many areas of Murfreesboro that are quite the opposite.

I have a Murfreesboro mailing address but am outside the city limits surrounded by horse farms, cow farms, etc. That said I can get to the grocery stores in 5 minutes. The rest of the shopping is another 5 minutes away. So very peaceful where we live. Hardly a "city" environment.

Hi, I came across this post and I am also now looking to move to TN this summer 2017. I am also debating into Murfreesboro or mount Juliet. I also have a 8 year old boy and I am looking for him to grow up in a good neighborhood with a backyard and a small town feel. I am moving from Miami, FL with my husband and son. We want to be no more than 30 min from the Nashville airport, but most importantly we are looking for a nice house with cheap rent (the opposite of Miami.) Unfortunately we will not be traveling to visit before moving because we are trying to save up as much money as possible to hold us off for a few months while we find jobs. My son plays baseball so I will be looking for team for him to hopefully join over there.. any suggestion or inputs‽

I sent you a Direct Message judithq231. Siegel is the school system of the area I referenced. It's know as "Triple Siegel" because all of the child's schools progress through the system.

I can't say a ton about either area, but I will say this. We currently live in antioch (near 24) and now that we're closer to murfreesboro we go shopping there more often. My wife loves that all of the shopping is centralized and easy to get to (you're not going across town to get to one store). Not sure if that's an issue or not for you but one of her biggest peeves is that living in Nashville, though we have very good shopping options, often we have to hit two different shopping areas to get to all the stores we want to visit. Now granted this is based on your needs and wants but my wife loves how murfreesboro is set up. We drove through mt. juliet yesterday and thought it was very nice. We especially liked the area by the lake. I think murfreesboro is nice in that its its own stand-alone city and you don't have to drive into nashville. However if you work in nashville your commute will likely be longer. We just moved to antioch and my wife has mentioned a couple times now how she'd like to move out to murfreesboro... so, who knows.

I like it also Kluch....... For me other than SLick Pig BBQ, most everything I need is North of Old Fort Parkway and I don't even need to venture down to the college area. They are building like crazy up hereon Memorial on the North side of town. I heard they were putting another Home Depot up here in the North also and Chic Filet will be done probably in 2 weeks.
