Nashville is in the running for a possible MLS expansion team. Question is, what does a 3rd pro sports team do for the city? Does it make Nashville more cosmopolitan? Does it increase an already expanding national profile?

Being a soccer fan, my assumption is that, yes, it would shed a bit of the country reputation of Nashville and in fact make people see the more modern and diverse side of the city. In soccer circles anyway.

I think it's more this than anything else you mentioned. If anyone still thinks we are Hee-Haw, barefoot, and overalls then they've had their nose in the air or head up their...chimney. So we don't need it to appear cosmopolitan or to help tourism.

But really, I think it's because we're a great soccer city/area. Nashville has come out in droves to support the US Mens and Womens National Teams, setting new records each time they come (for Tennessee soccer attendance). We'll have the USMNT's Gold Cup game this summer and an EPL game later that same month.

I think it's more than a "if you build it they will come"...rather, this area has demonstrated it has an appetite for soccer.

In other words, it's a good business move to support a team to place it where it is likely to be wildly supported.

I honestly think having the Preds being in the Stanley cup playoffs is enough.

Maybe 2 or three years ago when neither team was good.. fine... but now-a-days, we don't really need it.

Plus, with Megan Barry wasting the city's money with useless skyscrapers, we'd run out of money if we tried to start a team and build a stadium.

Oh, there are a very large number of people who still think this. Especially if they have never been here or if they have not been here in more than five years.

Which useless skyscrapers would those be?

Probably that huge one that is about as tall as the at&t building/Batman building, the bridgestone one, and many others. If you get a good view of downtown, you'll see that there are many building being built, many of them being useless.

I am surprised they are in the running because Atlanta got a team. How many teams is MLS adding, the league is getting way too big. It would be cool to get an MLS team thou.

I'm not even a Nashville resident, and I still don't see how this makes any sense. I wish I had a mayor like Megan Barry.
