Nashville mayor signs an executive order that will help LGBT owned business and making the City the first city in the South to recognize LGBT-owned businesses in this way. Nashville is becoming a true progressive city to the core.

I don't know the ins and outs of what that really helps but that seems good. But if we're really progressive then we should legalize the sticky. And I don't even use it.

I can agree with that, and that needs to be a US thing as a whole to be honest.

Smart move for Nashville.

NCAA and other organizations are quick to pull business out of a community that is deemed intolerant for Gays. Don't believe me look at Charlotte.

For a city to be truly viewed as progressive, there needs to be a LGBTQ initiative to build a so called image. Community centers, nursing homes along with a vibrant LGBTQ district is what many look for in a city regardless of orientation now days. Right or wrong, it is what it is. OTOH, the LGBTQ community is not an economically disadvantaged demographic. I guess that is a subject for another thread.

As with everything even slightly disruptive or progressive that Nashville does, it will be interesting to see what the folks a few blocks away at the State Legislature have to say about it.

This was my thought too. However, LGBTQ should be given a fair chance at contracts just like anybody else. I can't imagine somebody pulling a contract because of sexual orientation but maybe it happens🤔. If everybody treated individuals as they wanted to be treated we probably wouldn't have to waste tax dollars on these things. All people should be treated with respect no matter sexual preference, religion or race.

That's nice. Big picture thinking, I guess, but yes, it will be at odds with our legislature, one of whom sponsored a bill today that would make the federal gay marriage law void here.

But the mayor really needs to get a handle on the youth violence problem, which is now an epidemic and has seeped out into the surrounding counties as teens and young adults steal cars looking for guns and things they can sell.

That is an immediate need.

I think it was a good move on Metro's part to be able to track the well-being of LGBT owned businesses, especially considering how many of them exist here and how many more may open in the future.

Maybe I'm being naive here but how does this affect how people are being treated? If you're going to discriminate against people how does this ensure that you don't at the end of the day?

How exactly are they going to confirm that someone is gay or Bi when giving them preferences on city contracts? It's easy to tell if someone is black or a woman when giving them preference but not this. Get ready see ridiculous fraud with this program on the taxpayer's dime. As another poster mentioned gay people typically aren't financially disadvantaged. They typically due quite well as a group, which makes this more insane.

No one should be given preference on any city contracts. It should be based solely on their qualifications and low bid. Why are certain groups punished or rewarded by something they have no control over, how they were born?
