Seeking your thoughts on MTSU, Middle Tennessee State University. The good & the bad. Info on dorms/living on campus not needed. Not sure what student would be majoring in, but would like to hear your thoughts on the school in general. Feel free to discuss your thoughts on other nearby universities/colleges. Thanks a bunch!

Generally speaking, I think MTSU has an average to above average reputation. It is the largest university in TN by undergraduate population (or at least was a few years ago). My impression is that it is a convenient location for many students, mostly affordable, and is relatively easy to gain admission. That said, I believe you can get a very challenging and quality education there depending on the major. But I also think a lot of students sort of skirt through there just to get a college degree (which is probably true for most state schools). Their facilities are a mix of older (early 80s) buildings and relatively state-of-the-art new buildings such as the library. Full disclosure, I got my graduate degree from MTSU and had a fantastic experience there for grad school.

If you're looking at other public universities in the area, consider TN Tech in Cookeville, Western Kentucky in Bowling Green KY. Loads of private schools in Nashville like Belmont, Lipscomb, Vanderbilt (of course) to name a few.

I took some classes there several years ago, and I was really impressed with the quality of instruction. These were all in the English dept FYI.

The campus can have a commuter feel, even though it has increased its on-campus amenities recently. But based on what the kids of friends of mine who have attended both MTSU and other universities in the past 5 years, MTSU feels more like an actual university than nearby schools like Western KY and UT Chattanooga, which many say still feel a lot like high school.

They are known for the journalism program and archaeology/history too.
