Hi,

We just moved to the Nashville area of Tennessee. I have read that Nashville reversed its decision on common core math and phased it out. But I looked at my daughters homework and it looks like common-core to me? Can anyone advise on the current curriculum?

Call the school and ask the teacher. That is the best source in terms of what your daughter is learning in her specific class.

What makes it look like Common Core?

It was phased out here in 2016.

In which county do you live?

Now it's called Tennessee Standards and it's just as convoluted as Common Core. https://www.chalkbeat.org/posts/tn/2...or-the-change/

Common core is a set of standards not a curriculum.

TN rebranded its standards in 2016 but they are basically the same standards with a new brand name.

The way math is taught now is a lot different than when we were kids and I think that is good. Kids are taught 3-4 ways to learn how to add big numbers so hopefully one works vs the traditional

Now they can break it out 400+ 30+ 80+ 2 + 5, etc..

It is also helpful for kids who "just get it" in the early grades because they are now required to show their thinking so hopefully when they get to higher maths showing their work isn't such a challenge (I really struggled with this is geometry because I could just see the answer but explaining myself was hard).

You all do realize that "Common Core" math isn't something to be scared of, right? The strategies that people complain about in Common Core math are how people who actually understand math already do it. Long division, "carrying the one", and adding zeros in multiplication (amongst other traditional strategies) typically lead to a superficial understanding of math that doesn't serve people well over the long run.

If you ask anyone who is good at math how they do it in their head, they will almost uniformly describe Common Core techniques.

400+30+80+2+5 = 517, not 515.

400+30+2+80+3=515
