I am from Chicago, my husband from New Orleans. I am interviewing for a job in Nashville this weekend. We are a young, black professional couple and would like to live in a neighborhood that is diverse, had lots of little places to walk to and eat, family owned businesses. We live in New Orleans right now and love it. We tend to live in neighborhoods that are "up and coming." I will be moving there for a year by myself with my husband coming on weekends. We will rent and then buy if we stay. What is a good area to rent, live it up for a year, have stuff going on around us, diversity, nice people, and a less than 30 min commute to Brentwood?

newtonash, you described much of East Nashville in your post. I would start there as it's "up and coming", diverse, lots of places to walk & eat, non-chain businesses, etc.

Like bluesky42day said, definitly East Nashville. Here's a link to a story from the Knoxville News Sentinal from last August to give you a little background. A lot of musicians and artists live on the eastside and I think it would be the only area here remotely similiar to New Orleans. You can do a search on this website for more information on East Nashville.

In East Nashville, hipsters and families create a funky vibe : Travel : Knoxville News Sentinel

Hello- I am considering a move to Nashville in the next few months. My Girlfriend and I are 32, social, active, have a dog and love live music. We love to take walks at night and meet other young couples. We will be renting (1200-1600/month) and want either an urban loft or a single family home with a yard. Who out there can suggest some areas of town that sound like a good fit for us??? thanks in advance.

You might want to look in the Midtown area (Hillsboro Village, the West End corridor, 21st Avenue, the "gulch"). That would probably be a good fit for you, and I think it's within your budget (although I don't keep up with rental rates). One of the nicer redeveloped area of East Nashville might also be a possibility. There are a few other parts of town that might works for you as well (Green Hills, Old Hickory, Bellevue, maybe even Germantown if you can accept something a little on the "gritty" side), but those two would probably be my first choices for what you're looking for.
