Homestead AFB died long before the Hurricane, from what I remember It was used as a refugee camp for Hatians sometime in the 80's..
Is Homestead AFB still open? I am now thinking the hurricane didn't take all the on-base housing and other buildings.

My Father was stationed at Amarillo AFB in Texas in the early 60's. The base later closed. A few years ago, my wife and I, on a camping trip to Glacier National Park, decided to take a look at my past in Amarillo, since we were passing through there on I-40. The base housing I lived in during the 60's is still there. The houses look the same, except the trees are a few feet taller. There are people living there, and the area is well kept.

But, the main part of the base is gone. All the buildings, telephone poles, street lights and guard shacks at the entrances are gone. The streets are still there. I am wondering, if Homestead AFB closed several years ago, did the military "dis-assemble" the base.

By the way FutureTexan, I am a native Texan. My birthplace is San Marcos, Texas and while Daddy was in the military, I lived all over the state of Texas.

Sorry about drifting off the original poster's topic.

Thanks,
Buzz

No, Homestead AFB was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew and it never re-opened from what I understand.

My wife is from Louisiana and wants to be close to her family and I'm a beach/warm weather guy being from Florida so we agreed on Houston, TX if we chose to leave Nashville.

From what I understand, the economy crunch hasn't affected much of Texas at all. You pay a TON of taxes but the housing prices really make up for it.

Oh, only just now noticed that...

It seems that I can't edit the post, though.

Default Homestead AFB

The most reliable resource because anyone can edit it.

As others have said, you won't really have a problem finding a place in this price range, especially in outlying areas with more land.

2) How bad are your winters in terms of road conditions and snow? Would I be able to commute?
We probably average 2-3 snowfalls of 2 inches or more per year. Although lately I don't think we've been getting that much. The snow itself is not a problem, the ice is. Nashville drivers do not do well in winter weather and we don't have the road clearing equipment that northern cities have. When we get snow in the forecast, it's kind of a big deal...people don't act rationally and get anxious about it. As long as you drive slow and use your head, you'll be fine...but as is usually the case you have to watch out for the other guy.

3) I don't mean to offend anyone here by asking this question, but how well received would my wife and I be in Tennessee? We are both Hispanic-and no we are not illegal aliens. I was born and raised in this country but my wife is new to America(from Colombia) and is just now learning how to speak English. Again I do not mean to offend but it seems by reading some of the posts and other research I've done on the internet that most of Tennessee's Hispanics are Mexicans-many of them illegal. Is there much discrimination and hatred towards all Hispanics?
I don't think there is hatred, necessarily. However, I'm sure that some people would have a negative reaction to having new hispanic neighbors. The same could be said for any ethnic group and it's not just a Nashville thing...you could experience the same discrimination in any city in the nation. I think as long as you're a good neighbor then you won't have any problems. I used to help teach English as a Second Language and can tell you that the hispanic community here is growing and becoming more active.

I think by-and-large most Nashvillians are open minded and wouldn't openly discriminate. But recently there has been some backlash to illegal immigration that has no doubt spread over into a general backlash against hispanics. About a year ago an illegal immigrant fled the police drunk driving and killed a couple, which stirred up some feelings on both sides. Still, I don't think you're going to be uncomfortable as long as you practice the golden rule.

Good luck!
