Kim918 asked me to ask this question for her. She is a bit shy. Being the great friend that I pride myself on being, I agreed to do so.

Do you think that when they built 100 Oaks Mall in Nashville they counted the trees and the type, as to arrive at an appropriate name?

LOL! That's ridiculous.
That IS an old shopping area. I see it from the interstate but have never gone there. Husband remembers going there when he was a kid, under age 7. His family lived in Nashville then...mid to late 1950s.

Dead malls used to be a passion of mine because I generally don't like malls. So I used to know the history behind 100 Oaks but can't seem to find it. I do know that 100 Oaks opened in 1968 and was anchored by JCPenney, Woolco and Harvey's. It was the first enclosed mall in the state and was built by Memphis-based Belz Enterprises. Unfortunately for the mall, it was opened adjacent to I-65 but there was no exit off I-65 to access the mall. Once RiverGate and Hickory Hollow opened, that was the kiss of death for 100 Oaks.

It was built on a site that had been a bunch of apartments. However, I believe that there used to be an old mansion around there that had been torn down a long time ago, and its name was 100 Oaks. Or something like that. I think.

FYI: 100 Oaks is being renovated by Vanderbilt Medical Center which is going to turn it into a giant medical mall. There will still be retail on the bottom level (TJMaxx, CompUSA, Luxury Linens, and I'm not sure what else) while the rest of the mall will be converted into doctors' offices and clinics.

Here's what the mall looked like when it opened in 1968:

Here's what it should look like after Vanderbilt is finished renovating it:

JMT - great stuff you posted! Sadly, I must spread more rep around before giving to you again. I remember going to 100 Oaks as a kid when it was a hot place.

LOL, if I was snarky I would say that I didn't realize you had feelings (plural) until now but I won't.

Ok, back on topic...... where were we...... oh yea, the 100 Oaks Mall minus 100 Oaks.

Thanks for posting such great info about 100 Oaks, JMT! I remember going there with my parents in the early 70's before Hickory Hollow opened. As I recall, it was a very nice, bustling and busy mall with plenty of nice and clean stores. We were so much closer to HH when it opened, that we rarely went back to 100 Oaks.

I went to Burlington Coat Factory/Baby Depot a few times when I was pregnant with my first child and found a lot of great deals there. The atmosphere has changed drastically, though, and sadly it's not a place I'm comfortable going to by myself anymore.

Welll good lord, this thread was supposed to be my way of making fun of Kim918. Now we are taking a trip down Memory Lane!

We are getting completely off topic here! We need to get back to the OP's original intention; poking fun at an innocent person!
