Talk to me about Portland -- what is a realistic commute to Nashville? Are there traditionally job opportunities available there? Is it a good place to raise families?

Portland commute to Nashville would be around an hour or so in rush hour at least. In off peak times, 30-45 minutes. Not bad and these are just "guesses" from me not actual numbers.

Portland has a bunch of small industry as well as Franklin, KY across the state line. Not huge factories and warehouses, but a fairly sizable offereing. It shouldn't be a HUGE problem finding a job but with the economy the way it is, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Quality of life is what you would expect from a small town. Although, I did work with some from there and they really didn't like it after about 10 or so years in Portland. I think that's fairly true with all young people who are raised in small towns though. Hope this helps a little.

Portland is a haul to Nashville and I don't think they are doing great economically. They just closed their hospital and sent what staff they didn't lay off to the one in Hendersonville. Hendersonville would probably be a better option for you, or White House if you want to be in a smaller, quieter area.
