I look at the aggregate-2 horrific ones (in way of casulaties) in 12 years; I'm referring to 2005 when I belive nine died (6 near Vol State in Gallatin), and Feb 2008, when Castillan Springs alone lost 9 people, and 5 more died in nearby towns.

I know Murfreesboro had significant damage, but I believe fatalities were low, and a typical snowstorm (I flew into Ct last year into one of 8-12 inches) kills 3 or 4 in Southern Ct..each time.

I was 1 mile away from downtown Nashville in 1998, and watched softball size hail, and saw damage downtown within 36 hours close up, but again only 1 died. that's what matters.

Bob - When you live right near where an eF4 slammed through, you stop thinking numbers and start thinking that it very well may have been you. There were 2 fatalities in Murfreesboro, but that was 2 too many! The downtown tornado of 98 was NOTHING compared to the F4 here. I should know, I was in it in 98. You just don't get it until you come "this" close to being wiped out yourself.

It was an F4, but 2 fatalities, quite frankly, more die daily on I65. That's why I separate the 2 major ones (Vol State, Castalian Springs) from the rest, and the latter had a majority killed in mobile homes.

Destroyed buildings ala Murfreesboro can be rebuilt.

Lives cannot be.

You just don't get the emotional impact it has Bob. You would have to have experienced and seen what I did. I'm sure I could throw around a bunch of numbers to people who have been in earthquakes and other natural disasters, but I wouldn't get it unless I had experienced it.

As my husband said when one of the tornadoes came near us "This is the first time in my life that I feel completely helpless knowing my life could be taken away and can't do a thing about it". This is why when we are able to afford a tornado shelter, we will put one in. It is better to be safe than sorry or even worse, gone.

Wise move Barb. Your husband hit the nail right on it's head.
