The Midtown (Vandy, West End, 21st Avenue) area isn't cheap, but yes, it would probably be what you're looking for. There are some older apartment buildings in the area that are considered "affordable".

if i move on my own then i can't spend too much on rent... i may have a roommate and we wouldn't want to pay more than probably 1200/month. anything in that price range in the areas you mentioned???

I don't keep up with apartment rental rates, but I think $1200 a month would be enough for a reasonably nice apartment in the area. You might even be able to find something for less.

There are a lot of students in the area (Vanderbilt and Belmont), so there are housing option in the area that are not too expensive.

If you would be interested in a temporary roommate situation I might have something in mind. I have a female friend who owns a house in the area and sometimes has a roommate (she doesn't have one at the moment). The house is in the Sylvan Park area, which is right off West End at I-440. Of course, if you already have a houseful of furniture this probably wouldn't work.
