I have heard so much about it. I hear it is like a mall. How large is it? I heard that it is the closest thing to a mall downtown. Is this true?

It's not a mall in the modern sense. It dates back to the turn of the twentieth century (1902) and is still active today. Check this site out and the photos will describe what it is/was quite well.

Historic Nashville:The Arcade

It's interesting that something so old has survived with most of the original intent when something all fancied up like the now gone Church Street Center mall, never had a chance. It was a large, quite pretty multi-story shopping mall. We tore it down and replaced it with our beautiful main library.

WNPT2 sometimes runs a short segment about the arcade (I think as part of the Memories of Nashville program).

It's probably not worth a trip downtown just to see it, but if you're ever downtown for some other reason be sure to go through it.

IngleDave mentioned the Church Street Center. Back in the old days, Church Street was the street for shopping; all the major stores at the time were there. I worked downtown in the early 80s and most of the stores were still open. By the late 80s they were all gone. That was pretty much the end of ordinary shopping downtown.

I would describe it as an enclosed strip mall. It's an enclosed row of shops and mostly restaurants. It's a great place to eat with friends because of all the restaurants and "outside" (really inside, since the arcade is enclosed but outside of the actual restaurant) tables inside the arcade. While I don't think any of the restaurants are worth a special trip downtown, they all are good. What is worth a trip is the Peanut Shop and their homemade peanut butter cups-but call ahead since they don't have them everyday.

The Arcade is pretty cool, though as others have said, I'm not sure it alone is worth a special trip.
