Why are there so many disconnected Old Hickory Boulevards in this city??? I've seen some weird road planning believe me but this has to take the cake.

At one time it formed a loop around the city.
Keep in mind that soooooo many of the roads here weren't planned--obviously. They just happened. They were Indian paths, trade paths, routes following streams, the way people walked from one farm, community, etc. to the next farm, etc. As I'm sure you know, most all of them converged upon Nashville creating a look that on maps looks like a wheel with Nashville as the hub. Old Hickory Boulevard was the rim of the wheel. I guess you could call it an early city by-pass!

Makes more sense now... I'm from Lexington and a lot of the roads were formed for the same reason but still would it not make more sense to just rename some of the roads? I've been here for 5 months and still get extremely confused (OH turns into Bell Road but there's another OH just south of it?)

Old Hickory Blvd has many changes. Do not try to follow it around as you may be circling for hours. There is one section that ends at Hwy 100, and then starts off Hwy 100 again. You find porttions of it all over towns. There have been many jokes about it

As I recall, a writer for the Tennessean tried to circumnavigate Nashville on OHB a few years back and it took him/her most of the day to do it. This was before GPS devices and the like...

It is, without a doubt, a silly thing about our city.

Also watch out for McGavocks. They are all over the place. Sometimes when I'm showing property I'll use my in dash navigation, a plug and play GPS and mapquest printouts. Not one of the three is right all the time!

Harding is another one that can be tricky for a newcomer. It turns into Woodmont at Franklin Road, then pops up again way out in Belle Meade. It doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to make a few name changes here and there to make our road system make more sense, but it hasn't happened yet.
