My husband may take a job in Smyrna. We have an 8th grader. What is the area like as far as school, cost of living etc?We live in CA now, but it's just not as safe as I'd like and it's way too expensive.

Hi Chester,

I am a realtor in Murfreesboro and a native Middle Tennessean. Smyrna is adjacent to Murfreesboro and many consider it a suburb of Murfreesboro, while others consider it a suburb of Nashville. Either way, Smyrna is a nice town but not a "city" like Murfreesboro or Nashville. Nissan has a producton factory located in Smyrna and their main headquarters has moved to Cool Springs in Franklin. Smyrna has some lovely homes, good schools, and limited shopping. You will need to go into Nashville or back to Murfreesboro for things like movies, shopping, and dining out on a larger scale. Lots of fast food and chain restaurants in Smyrna though!

The average price of a home in Smyrna (based on active listings) is $194,000 for 1940 square feet. Drive time to Murfreesboro is approximately 15 -20 minutes and drive time to Nashville is approximately 30-40 minutes. Smyrna is located in Rutherford County which is the fastest growing county in the state. Murfreesboro was just selected by CNN Money Magazine as one of the top 100 Best Places to Live. To the best of my knowledge, crime is not an issue in Smyrna. My clients that have moved here from CA felt like they gotten a huge raise when they relocated here from CA. I think you will find housing and cost of living here to be low, especially compared to other parts of the country.

My website has detailed informaiton on individual schools, school districts as a whole, property taxes, etc. FYI - Tennessee does not have a personal income tax. Our sales tax runs about 10%.

If you have specific questions on Smyrna, please feel free to email me. I'd be happy to help you any way I can.

Default wellkids

thank you for replying. I've been searching and murfreesboro is sounding like a very real possibility for us. I haven't read much about MTSU yet, but I also like that a state university is so close. My 14 year-old will be that age soon.
