Harbinger-of-spring was in bloom in the woods yesterday, here in the Ohio Valley! Other spring ephemeral foliage is sprouting, just below the still-intact leaf cover from last fall. We need a good snowfall to help push down last year's leaves, cut down on fire danger, and give the almost-ready wildflowers a little boost. I suppose today's heavy rain will have to suffice, however.

I drove over the mountain today to Santa Rosa; Spring is further along over there, was bright and sparkling with 74º in the afternoon.

The exciting part was when I saw (I think) a Swainson's Hawk Swainson's Hawk . Was seeing it fly over the windy mountain road: there was nowhere to pull off to watch it and indeed I confess to Distracted Driving there for a couple of moments. Reason reasserted itself and I continued on.

Here's another mink stealing a fish the owner no doubt didn't really need.

Here in Council Bluffs, Iowa we have black squirrels. And in my yard I have deer, foxes, wild turkeys, quail and many song birds. Right in the middle of the city.
