Yet, if you hang a pair of old boots from a nail on the fence they'll nest in them.

Got out with the binoculars this weekend again. Wild violet, spring beauty, and skunk cabbage are up. Saw a mixed winter flock (chickadee, titmouse, nuthatch, Carolina wren, song sparrows, white-throated sparrows, etc.) plus robins, red-bellied woodpeckers, flickers, etc. I heard the first phoebe of the year! Rounded out the walk with a pair of belted kingfishers.

Or, in my sister's case, they nested in a Christmas wreath she left on her front door!

Lots and lots of cowbirds, male and female, at my feeders the last few days. Boy, do they love to talk. My husband and I joke that since they are parasitic nesters, they don't have anything else to do all day except coffee klatsch around the feeders. LOL

Just saw a male ruby-crowned kinglet in the back yard for the first time. Probably on his way back to Canada to find a mate for the summer.

A large sea slug.

Looks like a big garden slug about 6" long but was under my boat when I was cleaning

The small bullfrogs have appeared again, as have the leopard frogs. They gather this time of year around the dragonfly watergarden. I am surprised so many of the tadpoles escape the dragonfly nymphs.

The nymphs themselves are hard to spot. Soon I will buy a batch of small minnows for the nymphs to feed on, and in a few more weeks I will be rewarded by a plethora of dragonflies. I counted 7 different species last year. They vacuum mosquitoes out of the air for us; makes sitting outside in Mississippi very pleasant.

I witnessed a hawk attack on my purple martin colony today. He left with empty talons!

I reading something on the computer, when I felt something sort of tickle my left wrist. I shook my wrist and a jumping spider hopped onto my kitchen floor! He must have parachuted down from the ceiling (they do that a lot in my house) and landed on my wrist instead of the table. I got out the Spider Retrieval Unit (a playing card and an upside-down plastic bathroom cup), caught the little guy and opened the back door. When I released him, he spun some silk and slowly landed on my top stair. So cool.
