I guess we can't blame the hawk. He sees an easy meal just out of his reach. The hawks around here love to sit in the tree next to my bird feeders and swoop in when a big, fat, slow-moving dove least suspects it. I always imagine the hawk thinking, "Score!".

Follow-up. There seem to be two pairs hanging about. I am wondering if one pair isn't coming in and sabotaging the nest for the others.
Never seen this sort of behavior, before. It's been going on now for several weeks.
If they don't stop this, neither pair will have a nest when Spring settles in.

Anyone ever seen this sort of thing, before?

Are you sure you have Finches and not house Sparrows? House Sparrows can be very aggressive when it comes to nesting. They will take over existing nests, and even go inside houses and nests, killing baby and even adult birds, nesting right on top of them.

They're very territorial.

For about 2 weeks, there's a pair of crows who fly to a specific spot to find just the right size twig
to start their nest. Today I noticed they're bringing back softer materials.

I didn't realize that they recognize faces until recently.

Have not seen any Sparrows here. There were a number of sparrows around our other house about a mile away. But all I have seen here are Finches.
Two pairs, it seems.
