Linden - A N.J. man has been arrested in connection with shooting and killing squirrels in his backyard. If convicted, he could face six months of jail time.

According to Fox News, the man was arrested on an animal cruelty charge after he allegedly shot several squirrels on his property and then hung them out on a fence.

Squirrels are destructive. They are little better than rats with good public relations. If you've ever had squirrels get into your attic, you'd know exactly what I'm talking about. And people who sympathize with squirrels because they're so cute has never had a wire chewed through, creating a fire hazard.

I had a squirrel problem and had tried everything. I'd block up the hole the vermin had chewed in the eaves and they'd just chew another one. So every night, we'd hear them scampering up in the attic above our bedroom.

Finally, out of desperation, I bought a pellet gun. I wound up shooting two dozen of the things. One afternoon, I was sitting in my front yard, doing a little pest control when the police rolled up. They got out of the car and asked what I was doing. I showed them the hole in my house, and the officers nodded to each other. "Nothing to see hear, Sir." And they got back in their car and drove away.

Same situation here. I bought a pellet pistol. Now if I could just hit a few!

I will be Darn. I must have the most gangster squirrels on planet earth as one hoped in my truck and planted its rear on my passenger seat. The Raccoons are the size of small dogs.....what the hell isgoing on with mother Natures creatures?

In my state, any appropriate action can be taken to remove, deter or molest an animal that constitutes a nuisance. Unles the species is listed as protected. It's not too hard to convince the authorities that squirrels are a nuisance, but the onus is on the human to make that case.

Discharging a firearm is not legal in certain jurisdictions, which nearly always includes cities or towns. If the squirrels are shot with air rifles or pellet guns, though, and are a genuine nuisance, it sounds legal to me.

Texas ranchers routinely hang their coyote carcasses on a fence, which keeps other coyotes away. No idea if it works for squirrels or not.

My maintenance man came in one day to spray the attic to get rid of bats. Some tenant had complained about the smell to the city health department, and on that basis alone the health department sent over an order to take measures to remove the bats. I phoned the game warden, and I was told that the department of health trumps wildlife protection, no matter how ignorant the functionaries are at the department of health. Maintenance did not spray with poisons to kill the bats, but with a odorous substance that would persuade the bats to sleep elsewhere.

That is actually as it should be. There is no given that a health dept employee would be any more or less ignorant than a wildlife protection employee, and they are perfectly capable of sorting out internecine battles amongst themselves. In the meantime, public health has to take precedence.

Is there any possibility those maintenance people could visit Washington for a big job?
