I have a pic of a black butterfly with a gold band of colour along the full length of it's wings and blue dots running alongside the gold band. Pic taken on Long Island, NY. Anyone know what it might be?

I posted the pic to my profile since it's not online.

I suspect it is a moth. Butterflies rest with their wings together, moths, with the wings down. MOths can be more difficult to identify.

It is a Mourning Cloak butterfly. Notice that the wing color is really brown until the border containing the blue spots, then it becomes black before the gold trim.

Thank you very much. I've done a couple of online searches and couldn't find it.

We've had a lot of them around our house since early Spring.

This one flew inside our house today, posed for the pic, then flew out when I reopened the door.

A few days ago one landed on the step I was sitting on, about a foot away, sat there for a bit then flew away. They seem very "domesticated".

I have another butterfly pic that I am hoping someone can identify.
Like the first, this one is my profile pic.
I thought it was the same as the first but it isn't.
Your help in identifying it is appreciated.

MO, Thanks. After seeing your answer I explored gardenswithwings.com and see they have a butterfly ID feature. I'll try that next time but if ever I'm stumped you're going to be my go-to person!

This was my wife's cell phone pic. She'll be pleased to know what it is. Thanks again.
High-five!

If your wife has a smart phone.......there is an app for butterfly identification. It is one of the Audubon Guides. When I was a little girl my hobby used to be butterflies. I had them all memorized, caught them, framed them, raised some from caterpillars and released them. Many decades later I have forgotton many but not all of the species. The gardenswithwings id feature would not have shown you it was a female. IIRC, in many of the species of butterflies the patterning of the female will be similar but not identical, and often much more muted (very much like female birds).
