I wish this picture was in better focus. Also, you can't tell the legs are bright red. It had what looked like vestigial wings. It walked around on the wall for a couple of hours. It was about 2" long. I thought it was a wasp at first glance, but no.

I know it looks like one, but I googled wasps with red legs and got nothing. Also, aside from the waist it was pretty wide for a wasp. This guy was huge. His legs were thick and large and prominent for a wasp. And either it was deformed, or it had no real wings.
The picture looked sharp on my camera, or I'd have taken another.

I think you're right! I wonder what happened to his wings.

it looks like a cicada killer that got into a fight with a lawnmower.

they look pretty menacing but are unlikely to cause you any problems. unless you're a cicada.

speaking of 'killer' insects - some years back, new mexico decided to name the tarantula killer wasp as state insect. but some goofus decided that name was too, er, intimidating, so they decided to call it the tarantula hawk wasp
