So I killed this copperhead in our driveway today. I apologize to the nature people in the crowd...I've got two boys 3 and under and I did not want to worry about this guy returning.

Since the snake was relatively young...does that mean there is possibly siblings nearby or are they pretty nomadic? Anyone know?

Well...I figured that I'd get the typical "you shouldn't have killed it because it may not have been poisonous". But, I know my snakes, and this indeed was a copperhead.

With two little guys who love being outdoors I just didn't want to leave it. Obviously the snake probably would have moved on it's way but if somehow one of my children was bitten I'd have a hard time with that.

They are relatively common in the south so whacking one is no big deal. They aren't endangered and I will give anyone who says so to the contrary a free guided tour of North Georgia's wooded areas to proove it. There's plenty. Not endangered.

Having small, curious boys I would say you did the right thing. That one looks kind of young and I am sure there is more than one. Keep your eyes peeled. As you know, they are quite visible.

I don't know if it is as young as you think it is. It could be the only one. I would love for you to look and kill any and all others tho!

If I had two young children, I'd be patroling the yard with a machete.

We bought 11.26 heavily wooded acres w/creek. We cleared out 2.5 acres approximately in the middle of the acreage. I visited neighbors and asked that, "when you see a black snake, please do not kill it, call me, I'll come get the snake" I ended up with about 8 black snakes between 4 and 8 ft long. I put them out around the edges of our clearing. I do see black snakes, but in 12 years I have seen no poisonous snakes (I just knocked on wood).

We had one in the yard that kept slithering over to see what we were doing. I'd pick it up with a shovel and put it in the woods, and it would just come right back. Didn't seem aggressive, just curious. Unfortunately, that was its undoing.

Many years ago there were rattlesnake hunters that would help control the rattlesnakes at a den close to our hunting cabin. Today; hunting rattlesnakes and copperheads is a thing of the past in PA – you are only allowed one and it cost $25 for the permit. We are starting to see more and more rattlesnakes around our camp. At sometime in the future I hope that they acknowledge that we have more snakes and ease the restrictions.
