i remember when hanta popped up in the southwest in the 90s seemingly out of nowhere. there's a school of thought that it has been there for hundreds of years, partly based on a navajo 'superstition' that appears to be fact-based.
navajos have long said that if you find a mouse nesting in your clothes - burn them. and since transmission seems to be mainly thru aerosolized rodent waste, that appears to be a pretty smart way to go..
