PHOENIX (AP) — An Arizona woman is wondering what hurt more: getting stung by a scorpion or seeing her hospital bill after treatment.
Marcie Edmonds says the bill from Chandler Regional Medical Center was more than $83,000. That includes two doses of anti-venom at nearly $40,000 per dose.

I looked up that African scorpion they show in the picture. It must have been kept by someone as a pet and it escaped. Too bad she doesn't know who the careless owner was so she could sue them. The wild scorpions here in Texas just cause a bit of pain, nothing serious. I can tolerate them, as they were here long before people lived here. Scorpions from other parts of the world can actually kill people, however!

Our scorpions here in NV are generally painful but not deadly. Though they can get quite large and nasty. Arizona has the red bark scorpions and soutbern NV has some nasty ones as well. Furtber south you go, the nastier critters get, as a general rule. If this particular arthropod is indeed an African critter o saurus, (gotta look at the pic) it comes as a surprise that the hospital even had anti venom. At least that could be available in time to help. Scorpion venom is neurotoxic and specific to species. Using an anti venom for a North Am scorpion on an African species sting would be like trying to treat a Cobra bite with Crofab. The antivenom for rattler bites. Useless and dangerous. Perhaps the picture of tbe scorpion was just handy to the one who wrote the story and he/she figured a scorpion is a scorpion?
After looking at the pic, I have to say that is the case. The picture looks like an exhibit.

yeah, that picture had nothing to do with the one that stung this woman. i've kept emperor scorps as pets for a long time, and they are far safer to handle than your average hamster or gerbil. if they were to sting you, which is very unlikely, it's not even as bad as a bee sting.
