A website is calling on citizen scientists to help researchers monitor and record Europe's bat population. The Bat Detective website needs people to help identify bat calls to help develop automated identification tools.
The site converts normally inaudible bat calls into something humans can hear and provides information needed to help visitors identify species.
In the US amny states' fish and wldlife departments have volunteer programs where you can get involved in anything from bats to bears.
A while back NJ was looking for volunteers to help with bat surveys.
It would be a good idea to check your states fish and game depts for opportunities.
Much science is directed by money and many species don't seem to make the cut. Can't under estimate the importance of non professional observation especially from hunters and trappers. some states will send out surveys to these license holders.
See the endangered species reporting systems you might get involved in. Hunting and fishing license fees support all this non game research otherwise there would be no funding except for scattered private interests.
