I've only seen 2 in all of my years of fishing in the Kanawha River and both were caught on night crawlers. I didn't realize they were that rare. My friends called them water dogs.

After some thought, I'm not sure if the Hellbender is the same creature that I saw. I Googled it and found this.

From what I have read the Great Smokey Mountains.. the creeks are the Holly Grail for salamanders more species are present than any other place on earth.
