I've had that pleasure, more than once (moose run-ins)...They are amazingly BIG, though each time I never felt threatened. I've also had a least a half dozen run ins with bears. Once when riding my bicycle down a dirt road I came around a corner, and there he was, on the side of the road,5 feet away, eating blackberries...I was freaked and didn't know what to do...I just kept slowly pedaling past as I stared at him, and him at me...once past, I gave it all I got, and left that bear in the dust...My sister was treed by a grizzly, her and her friend,..the bear even got to shaking the tree they were in...he was very determined, and when he did leave she could see him watching from the treeline..they musta waited 5 hours before they got the nerve to come down and beat a hasty retreat....one time I was bike riding again, down the same logging road, (we actually lived way the hell out for awhile) and not 20 feet away was this very small, very black adorable cub. That was REALLY scary, and could have turned out real bad for me, had not a logging truck come around the bend right then, I followed up close to the truck, until I knew I was safe...at least from mama bear.....Most of my run-ins have been with bears picking berries.
The reason none of your run-ins with the bears turned out bad may have been because they were too busy eating (one of their favorite things to do lol). It is still scary to just come upon one, especially if there are cubs involved.
