Call me sick but I think it's kind of beautiful! I've never been bothered by spiders ... (OK, this one might freak me out if it were in my house ...)
I do wish they had included a photo where we could actually see the size in relation to something else -- it's hard to imagine it being really as large as they said it is (I'm not doubting them, just wishing someone had put a ruler next to it, lol!).
Do we have any volunteers to let the spider crawl on their face so we can verify the size???
I'm an entomologist, and I would. Tree spiders are related to tarantulas, which are harmless, except for the urticating hairs they sometimes kick off their abdomens onto your skin, which can cause an irritating stinging sensation. But they really have to be bothered to do that.
Also, that spider wasn't just discovered. It's been known for some time, just not by the media, which is always looking to sensationalize things which the public fears. It's also not the largest spider. There area spiders in the giant huntsman group with 50% larger leg spans - 12" plus.
I also like spiders.
But I would shriek like a little girl if I found one of those (let alone a huntsman spider) in my house.
I take spiders outside with my bare hands instead of killing them. Unless they're black widows or brown recluses.
