He wanted to know how I was so sure it wasn't true? Did I think I knew about all animals? No, but, I know how they mate and give birth. After only a little research at the library I learned it was a belief of some people apparently due to when the tiny possums are born (from the usual place), they have to find their way to the pouch on the mother's belly. Often they end up on her face, probably crawling into her nose to perhaps eventually find the way to their home pouch. I also think knowing possums are different by being marsupials added to confusion for some.

Are you calling me a liar?

Some marsupials have a forked penis because the female has more than one uterus. Srsly.

I had never heard such a thing, so I decided to turn to my friend, Google. Here's what I found:

Do opossums really mate through the nose?

This is a myth that has been around for ages and has become so prevalent that I actually have seen a few websites about opossums which state it as fact. The truth is, there is no truth to it. The whole crazy idea seems to have come about because the male opossum has a bifid (forked) penis, and the only corresponding parts on the female appreared to be the nostrils. The myth states that after mating through the nose, the female later sneezes the tiny fetuses into her pouch. Rather than indicating what a unique animal the opossum is, this story actually just reveals how bizarre some people are in what they can imagine! In reality the male has a bifid penis because the female has two uteri (wombs), and sperm are deposited into each womb during copulation. But mating occurs through the vaginae, not through the nose.

How can one talk about 'Possums and not mention how nasty they smell?
That wool rug soaked in sewer water and wrapped around a dead carcass smell...
Phhheeeww, one notch below the skunk in toxicity to the olfactory sense!

Great sanitation pest control specialists though!

True, possums stink! I've had to pick up a dead possum with a garbage bag that decided to give up the ghost in our flowerbed a couple of years ago. But even alive they stink. If they get into a garage or storage building they'll stink it up, even if they don't crap everywhere, which they seem fond of doing. I know of someone who had a possum in their attic that died up there and had to be removed. I didn't envy them.

Well, no one's asking you to cuddle them.

I met a woman a while back who actually carries a "kit" in her car, and when she comes across a road kill 'possum, she will stop and use the stick that is in her "kit" to push the body around, looking for babies.

If she finds any, she raises them on 'possum "milk replacer," much like you would raise an orphaned kitten, and then she releases them when they're old enough.

Don't corner a Opossum they will mock charge several times stomping their feet like a skunk. Then they will charge with snarling teeth and hissing.
