Oh Boy, this is exciting.The music helps with that. But any other birth on concrete I've seen the keepers put saw dust of something down to absorb the fluids so the mother and baby don't slide around on the slick patches.

And their gestation is something like a year and a half!

I think it is actually 2 years. Birth is amazing and a mothers instinct of what to do is even more powerful. I have seen this happen before with elephants and how they kick the baby around until it begin breathing.

kudzu thank you for sharing...imaging how stressful in the wild,although the whole family stands than around the mother and calf protecting them from enemies.

I'll bet you're right. I didn't look it up. Anyway, it's a looong time. Maybe longest for a land animal. Makes you wander about whales.
