I believe most birds have decent reasoning ability. I like to feed the birds in my backyard, mainly chickadees. I don't have a bird feeder but I buy a giant bag of non-salted peanuts and toss the kernels to them. There's one tiny wren, little bigger than a mouse. He/she will make a racket outside my bedroom window when he/she wants to be fed. And I can't tell one wren or chickadee from another, but they seem to have the ability to distinguish me from other humans.
