If you notice on her deck she has a grill. If the bear did not smell the grill he probably would not be on her deck. She won the battle this time. But keeping the smell of food around in a rural setting can bring in trouble. That is one of the first things they tell you if you go camping in our national parks.

Yes indeed, animals have a very keen sense of smell. That bear will probably be back if that lady doesn't remove that grill.

Maybe she feeds the bear? Anyways, it was a black bear. They are cowards. Its the brown bears you want to worry about. Those will kill you.

More attacks/maulings happen with black bears than any other bear. Black bears will follow you right up the tree if you try to escape that way.

When I lived in Pa, there were many, many bear. I had a few on my deck and just stood at the door amazed. They are so beautiful. One year, shortly after movng there, kids were out trick or treating. A bear had just run through the yard and went down the road. I told the kids at the door to be careful and the little girl said to me: "Oh it's ok. They trick or treat with us every year". Another time, late at night, a bear literally broke half the door off the shed to get to bird seed. It sounded like a gun shot when it cracked off. I put the spotlights on, went out on the deck and saw the bear sitting there with half the door. I asked him to please knock it off and not do such damage. I told him to leave. He looked at me, looked at the door, slowly got up and left. Still another time, I was on the 2nd story deck watching a Momma bear and her 3 cubs. When something spooked her, she snorted at the kids and they all climbed the nearest tree, which happened to be against the deck. I was standing there, within arms reach of the cubs. Apparently she realized I was no threat because she ignored me. I loved living with the bear. They are gorgeous animals.
