Just to throw out a rank wildcat possibility... That could also have been a specklebelly. It would be pretty difficult to tell a swimming greylag from a swimming speck...

Except the range of the White fronted Goose (Specklebelly) does not extend to the LI region. Not likely for one to be there

Good point. I'm a central flyway guy... Tend to think in that orientation.

I understand that.

I used to live in Louisiana and thought every state had the same Geese. Up here we get a huge variety also.

You are correct though it is difficult to tell the Graylags and Speckled Bellies apart.

Ever been to Alaska in the early fall? AMAZING bird diversity. Sandhill cranes everywhere, saw a couple of whoopers, too. What really stuck out, though, was how alien the geese species were to me.

Oddly Alaska is the only State I have never been it, but it is the one I always wanted to. Flew over it many times, but never found an excuse to land at Elmendorf. Couple of times I thought about missing the Refueling tanker, but always decided that would be a dumb idea.
