(EDIT: I thought the dog had just gotten ahold of the boy's pant leg, but I just saw elsewhere that it actually bit the boy pretty badly, although he's home and doing well. Didn't mean to make light of it.)
When I was a little kid we had a cat and a dog who were friends. This was in an area where pets wandered freely, both dogs and cats. One day our dog got into a fight with another dog in our yard. Our cat jumped in to try and help. Our dog pushed her out repeatedly with his paw and she just kept jumping back in. Our dog also got involved with her cat fights. Fond memories.
It was fascinating because both of the animals were acting in abnormal ways. My dog sport friends are completely weirded out by the way the dog stalked the kid. Usually when a dog attacks, it happens all in a rush or there's some sort of triggering confrontation. This was very calculated and absolutely abnormal.
The cat just coming out of nowhere and attacking the dog was also strange. I mean, I had a cat that would guard my sleep at night, but this was a totally extreme version of that.
Fascinating to watch (rather than tragic, since the kid is fine).

I was wondering if the noise of the bike somehow irritated the dog. Because first he just heard it, then kind of peeked under the car although I can't believe he could see much, but then ran over and attacked. But, like you say, not really a good enough reason to attack like that, normally.
