the kind of private zoos I'm talking about are usually hoarders or rich people like Michael jackson and this drug lord who look upon exotic animals as fun pets. Road side menageries and people trying to make a profit off endangered animals try to circumvent laws and regulations. Lion mauling death: How dangerous are private zoos? (+video) - CSMonitor.com
Remember the guy with those wild animals on his property who let them all out and then committed suicide? All those beautiful animals had to be killed to protect the community.
Then there are the many private/public zoos which seem to be the best deal for animals and states alike.
I know you love hippos. It seems to me they are using these hippos to bring tourist to the community. if they can be kept well and safe and bring some economic gains to the area I'm all for it. But $60,000 per animal to castrate???That is ridiculous!

I might have already said this on similar thread but why not just give them away to random zoos or aquariums across Latin America or the world? If that doesn't work than why not just simply release them in some isolated area in Africa were hippos run wild? A few more hippos in Africa won't hurt. I don't get the logic in just killing them. Seems like a waste of life.
They were released in an area they didn't belong and that's what the problem is. They're actually a very dangerous animal-one of the few that actually fight to the death. Given the lack of fear and big appetite, releasing them just any place isn't a good idea. (Releasing any wild animal any where isn't a good idea no matter how helpful it seems).

Genetic issues if the pedigrees of the captive populations aren't exceptionally well known (and potentially if they are since selection hasn't been working on the captive population) and zoonotic disease introduction issues. Also, introducing a non local animal to an established local population can create social hierarchical issues in the established population.
