I used to wear perfume when I was younger. In fact I still have a nice collection of fragrances. Then I became aware of others who do not appreciate the intrusion. Then I became one of them. Why do we want to smell like something we aren't? I can understand it when bathing and laundering were weekly or monthly occasions but why still now? http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com...ype=blogs&_r=0
I stopped wearing cologne & after shave many years ago, and unfortunately I'm one of those people who can't tolerate most perfumes because they give me terrible headaches. My late wife was an Avon rep for many years, and enjoyed wearing her favorite fragrances, but had to keep it to a minimum for my sake... which she did without complaint.
I usually have no problem with it when out in public, but sometimes I do have to avoid someone who literally reeks of perfume. A little of it goes a long way, and I think a lot of people just use too much & it becomes overpowering.
But to answer your question as to why we wear it at all, I would say the main reason would be physical/sexual attraction. That's what all the advertising & marketing people would have you believe anyway.
But didn't it start as a way to mask our own natural (but not always pleasant) body odor just like other species?
Yes, in the beginning that was probably the reason. But (hopefully) our personal bathing habits are much improved over what they were in the 'old days'. So covering up body odor wouldn't be quite as necessary today. I still think modern humans use perfume/cologne mainly to impress/attract other humans.
