Earthquakes

We have earthquakes literally around the clock, and a felt earthquake takes place like every other day and I usually feel nothing, not that I'd have any sort of reaction when I actually feel one.

Those of us who live in Oregon have had it pretty soft as compared to the rest of the "Ring of Fire" We are fortunate enough to live on one of the most seismically quiet spots in the entire Pacific Rim. But...(there is always a "but", isn't there?)....we have had quakes as powerful as the Sendai Quake of 2011 and the Sumatra thing at the end of '04 - if not more so.
There's a book out by Jerry Thompson with a forward by Simon Winchester titled Cascadia's Fault that describes why we think there have been monster quakes in Oregon and Washington (and B.C.) in the past and why we are really close to due for the next one.
One of the greatest feats in forensic geology is also described here. The sleuthing and cooperation between geologists in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and in Japan unearthed a series of clues and dates that fixed the last big subduction quake not merely to the approximate year but was able to pin down the exact day and time of day to within a hour - all without any written records here of the event.
The most recent unzipping of the Cascadia Subduction Fault occurred on January 26th, 1700 at 9PM local time and was estimated to be anywhere between an M9.0 and a M9.3
The take away for all this is these quakes occur regularly on intervals of between 300 and 500 years so we here are anywhere from 15 years overdue for the next (big) one to having about two centuries to prepare
Tick....Tick...Tick.

Quite a big shake here around mid afternoon. 6.4 - lasting for about 15 seconds, and was enough for my cup of tea to spill over.

A few reports of damage from the shake yesterday -different neighbours had things breaking from falls, and one has a crack down their new path.
